Learning with healthy boundaries
We built Neo to strengthen students’ critical thinking. That means making room for productive struggle, where students try ideas, explain their reasoning, and learn from mistakes. Neo provides questions and targeted hints without doing the reasoning for students, helping them build independence and confidence in their own problem-solving. We want that support to strengthen their abilities, not create dependence on an AI tutor. Our guardrails are designed to keep tutoring age-appropriate, redirect harmful or inappropriate requests, and prevent Neo from claiming personal relationships or replacing human support. Throughout the app and onboarding, students are reminded that Neo is AI, not a person. To support healthy screen habits, students are reminded to take breaks at set intervals depending on their age.
Parents stay informed
Children should have room to work independently without parents being left in the dark. Alongside weekly summaries, “Ask Neo,” and skill analytics, we built Heads Up, a parent-alert feature that lets parents know when something their child says during tutoring may need their attention. It is designed to flag statements involving profanity, bullying, threats of violence, self-harm, or signs of emotional distress. For parent-managed profiles, these alerts arrive by email and in the PIN-protected Parent tab, with the flagged statement and a link to the session transcript so parents can understand the context. Accountability goes both ways: if the tutor says something wrong or inappropriate, students and parents can long-press that message in the chat transcript and submit a report for review.
Privacy families can understand
Families should not have to trade their child’s privacy for help with homework. We put that principle into practice with privacy safeguards designed to meet COPPA standards, including parent approval before children under 13 start tutoring. We keep Neo free of ads and never sell personal information or track students across other companies’ apps and websites. Product analytics exclude names, contact details, and tutoring content. That same principle guides how we work with vendors. Our privacy policy explains which providers handle voice and homework data, what information they process, and why. Families stay in control, with the ability to export or delete account data in the app.
